Think Valentine’s Day is all about hearts and flowers? Turns out the most romantic day of the year has a bit of a dark past.
Historians believe the holiday started in ancient Rome as the Feast of Lupercalia. The holiday involved men sacrificing a goat and a dog, then whipping women with the hides of the animals they had just slain.
The women would line up to be whipped, believing this would make them fertile.
Not very romantic, eh?
