Asus ROG Phone review: Gaming phone offers a brilliant audio-visual experience https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

With its smooth video and cacophonous audio, I chose the Asus ROG Phone as the best phone for media on my list of top Android smartphones of 2018 and the reason it does so well in this category is because it’s a phone designed for gamers.

Developed under the branding of Asus’ Republic of Gamers PC line, the ROG Phone has an impressive 6-inch AMOLED (2,160×1,080) 10-point multitouch display which provides rich colours and a vibrant look. The HDR display has a 90 Hz refresh rate (instead of the standard 60 Hz) with 1 ms response time. This means it both redraws the visuals on the screen and responds to your actions quicker than many competitors’ phones. So not only does it offer a better gaming experience but video in general looks smoother than ones even with a higher resolution.

It also features dual front-facing speakers with a smart amplifier which offer hi-res 192kHz/24-bit audio and DTSX virtual 7.1-channel surround sound. The audio was simply amazing. Even when cranked, I barely noticed any distortion. And just from the phone’s speakers alone, it was loud enough to fill a small a room.

The phone’s design evokes a gaming laptop. The 158.83mm x 76.16mm x 8.65 mm black device has a partially raised, etched back which displays the division’s angular logo. It looks a little bulky and, at 200 grams, is a little heavy as smartphones go, but it’s a sturdy and easy to grip.

Running on Android 8.1 (Oreo), the ROG Phone uses a 2.95 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor, 8 GB of RAM and 4,000 mAh battery which help aid in high-end mobile gaming, such as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile or Scrabble (those tiles move so quickly!).

One of the key features of the ROG Phone is the three programmable AirTriggers (two for landscape mode and one for portrait) and advanced haptics (vibration feedback). The AirTriggers are configurable sensors activated with a light touch. The portrait mode one lets you perform tasks or launch apps by squeezing the phone, while the landscape AirTriggers are for games. You basically have two extra buttons you can assign to actions, such as shooting, jumping, accessing your inventory etc., to give you an edge over other players online. Of course, some might call it cheating, but you can think of it more as ingenuity.

And if you really want to upgrade your gaming, there’s a bunch of accessories. The phone ships with the AeroActive Cooler, which is an external four-speed fan which clips onto the fan and reduces its temperature by up to 4.7°C but the more interesting ones you have to buy. There’s a Twin-View Dock, which adds a second 6-inch display with speakers and a 6,000 mAh battery which can charge the phone; a Gamevice, which adds dual analog joysticks and buttons to essentially turn it into a handheld gaming device; a WiGig Display Dock which lets you connect the phone to your TV; a Mobile Desktop Dock, which comes with a variety of ports, including HDMI 2.0, USB 3.1, SATA hard drive port, PC Display port and mic jacks; and finally a Professional Desktop Dock, a more pedestrian add-on, which simply has USB 3.1, HDMI 4K and an ethernet port.

The ROG Phone also comes with a dual-lens rear camera (12 MP and 8 MP) and an 8 MP front-facing camera. They do a serviceable job but there’s nothing really spectacular here.

The phone is available with 128 GB of storage at Best Buy for $1,149.99.
