British stage actor portraying Harvey Weinstein says victims allowed sexual abuse ‘in order to win parts’
A British stage actor who is portraying Harvey Weinstein in a stage production says the victims of the disgraced Hollywood producer let themselves be sexually abused in order to land gigs.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Steven Berkoff said Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct offences were “abhorrent”, however, some actors would “sell their souls for a role.”
“I don’t think (the sexual activity) was ever consensual in the sense that it’s consensual when a man and woman are attracted to each other,” Berkoff said.
Berkoff claims Weinstein knew he was unattractive and thought his power in Hollywood would attract the opposite sex.
“I would say he thought he was making a deal,” Berkoff continued. “I think it would be very unlikely that some women weren’t aware of what was going on and allowed themselves to be abused, because they felt, at the end of it, there might be a cheque or a part.”
The 81-year-old Berkoff was interviewed in order to promote his latest production, entitled Harvey, a monologue where he plays the 66-year-old Weinstein.
The allegations levelled against Weinstein spawned the #MeToo movement that led to the global protest of sexual misconduct in society.
