Russell Crowe and Catriona Balfe have criticized the Academy Awards bosses for dropping the presentation of several awards from the Oscars.

The Academy announced on Tuesday that it will not air a number of categories, including cinematography, film editing, live-action short and make-up and hairstyling, in a bid to reduce the running time of the broadcast to three hours.

Instead, those categories will be announced during the program’s commercial breaks.

Following the news, a number of famous faces from the film world have taken to Twitter to criticize the decision and highlight its implications for the film industry.

“The Academy is removing cinematography, editing and make up from the televised show,” tweeted Russell Crowe, adding, “This is just such a fundamentally stupid decision, I’m not even going to be bothered trying to be a smart arse about it.”

The Boy Erased star continued by calling the decision “too f—— dumb for words.”

Outlander actress Caitriona Balfe also tweeted about the decision, asking “Who on Earth is making these f—– up decisions. Movie making is a collaborative experience with each and every cog in the wheel playing an essential role.”

Speaking about the significance of the absent categories, The Shape of Water filmmaker Guillermo del Toro described cinematography and editing as “the very heart of our craft,” and concluded they represent “cinema itself.”

The live broadcast of the ceremony has seen a significant drop in viewership in recent years. The 90th Academy Awards ceremony, broadcast on March 4, drew an average 26.5 million viewers – almost 20% down on the previous year.

The changes to the ceremony, which will be broadcast on Feb. 24, are expected to further impact ratings, continuing the downward trend of previous years.
